The Psychic Twin Without A Twin

With less than 100 Followers on Twitter and about 206 Likes on Facebook (based on when I wrote this)…how legit could this emerging singer/songwriter be? Extremely. New Yorker DD Walker (Alex Marans) has yet to be truly recognized for his juggernaut talent. A few images are scattered throughout the internet of DD Walker; however, what caught my artistic eye was the imagery used as his album / song covers, as well as his involvement in his past bands. Capturing neon euphoria, I had no option but to give this man’s burgeoning talent a shot. Alex has played as the bass player with the likes of Atlas Genius and Bear Hands, as well as a few others. He is no new comer to the industry and he exemplifies this within both his instrumentals and lyrics within a fusion of melodies.

Similarly to how I feel after finishing off a Painkiller (the drink) or a sleeve of Oreos, I WANT MORE! DD Walker’s 5 Song EP is a force to be both messed with and listened to. I am going to focus this dissection on “Malibu”; however, I encourage listeners to try “Psychic Twins” and “Concord” as well. Personally, those are my three favorites.

Kicking the “80’s retro-vibe” EP off, Alex leads with Malibu”. To start, I am torn if this is titled after the location, since he sings of being taken elsewhere…maybe to a beach resort in Malibu? I do not think he is of the same mindset as Miley Cyrus, but the album cover makes me think otherwise. Is it the Chevrolet Malibu? Alex eludes to being in a car within the lyrics. One thing I can cross off is the liquor…unless the liquor has him feeling such. The lyrics enveloped within the track are extremely touching. Manifesting the imagery/feeling that SOMETHING, a ghost even, is pulling you into other directions is something that everyone has felt before. Another common imagery that many of us adults have witnessed is in the lyric “never fell so fast, so hard”. These liquified lyrics effortlessly paint imagery in our mind. Lastly, the other piece that really spearheaded my attention is the magnificent thought of getting out of somewhere, when the coast is clear. We are always being watched. When no one is looking, I will make that change. Personally, I advocate to always embark on an adventure regardless of who may or may not be watching.

“Psychic Twins” is, and I am not saying this to impress Alex, has to be some of the most remarkable messages I have heard in awhile. This may be because I married the love of my life prior to divorcing him, but they were thoughts I too had. Wondering, do you feel the pain I feel when we are in an argument? Do you feel the loneliness I feel when we are not together? Mainly, this could be for romantic lovers, close friends, or even familial. Connected at more than just the physical, but also the spiritual and mental. Excruciating amounts of symbolism within this song. Would love to speak with the artist about his experience when writing this.

Even the song “I Can Feel You Everywhere” is a vivid pattern of symbolic brilliance. The first 20 seconds of the song has some mysterious undertones. With tones of slight seduction, similar to that of The Band Camino. Another must listen.

Please, do not forget to check out this EP! All five songs are worth diving into. DD Walker is a Indie-Pop love child of Atlas Genius, Kwassa, and The Band Camino (in my opinion).
